Dealing with the deceased's body

If the deceased died in hospital, their body can often be kept in the hospital mortuary until the morning of the funeral or until you have arranged for a funeral director to take your loved one into their care.

If the deceased died at home, it is possible to keep your loved one’s body at home where the doctor or community nurse can help you to prepare it for the funeral.

Alternatively, your loved one’s body can be kept at the funeral director’s mortuary. You should contact a funeral director who will take your loved one into their care.

You may want to consider whether the body should be kept in a place where family and friends can pay their respects, if they so wish.
